Helping a Refugee with Blindness
by Luz Carmona
This blind patient recovered 10% of his vision with optometry support and flower essences. He suffered from post trauma, nightmares and loss of memory. I had to take him to a hospital a couple of times. He is from Ghana, where he lost all his family in an accident. An uncle killed all of the family, and he was the only survivor although he lost vision in one of his eyes. Somehow, he managed to escape from Ghana and reached Turkey where a car hit him and he lost the sight in the other eye. Instead of taking him to the hospital they took him to the prison where was severely beaten and abused.
Eventually, with the help of a man from Togo, he reached the coast of Lesvos, where I met him at the clinic in Moria. At the camp, his struggle continued while other African refugees mistreated him every day. He was sleeping on the floor and had memory loss. On one occasion, he was walking alone in the camp, when I met him, and asked him why he was walking alone; he was not able to recognise my voice. Then, I took him to UNHCR and with tears in my eyes I requested them to transfer him to a house out of Moria. In less than one week, he was in a shared house in Mitilini.
After many visits and flower essence treatments, he was able to see shapes and colors. His emotional state of depression and memory loss improved considerably. We provided him a phone designed for use by blind people and a cane. However, after using the new lenses provided to him, he stopped using it. I never have seen such a miracle... Last time he called me was to tell me he had reached Germany and was sending me blessings and gratitude. His words: ‘I will never forget you.’
